This will be my second year running the 25K for my favorite nonprofit: New City Neighbors. This ministry impacts the lives of children in big ways. New City Neighbors focuses on young people that live in the Creston neighborhood. Through programs like Breaktime, Breaktime Bakery, and the Urban Farm, children learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, acquire key life and work skills, receive needed individual attention, and experience what it means to work as a team.

Of all the excellent programs available to the kids, my favorite is the Urban Farm. The farm is tucked away on the grounds behind 4th Reformed Church on Leonard St. and Union Ave. NE. Every growing season, high school students are hired to participate in the hard work of organic vegetable growing. Not only do they learn how to farm, but also gain valuble customer service skills, actively participate in marketing techniques, get exposure to higher education and job shadowing, and much more. The food grown on the farm is sold through CSA farm shares, a farm stand, and through five course farm-to-table meals at Graydon’s Crossing.

If you’d like to learn more about the Urban Farm or any of the other programs, check out the New City Neighbors website: newcityneighbors.org
